NIE NUMBER

The N.I.E. number is a Tax Identification Number, known in Spanish as the “Número de Identificación de Extranjeros”. The NIE number is issued by the National Police of Spain. In accordance to Spanish law foreigners who, due to their economic, professional or social interests, are related to Spain, will be issued this personal and unique number for identification purposes. It is required to buy and sell properties, vehicles and boats.

SPANISH RESIDENCY

Stay shorter than three months

In cases in which the stay in Spain of a citizen of a Member State of the European Union or of another State party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area, whatever its purpose, has a duration of less than three months, it will be sufficient to posses a valid  passport or identity card.

Stay longer than three months

Citizens of a Member State of the European Union or of another State Party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area and of Switzerland have the right of residence in Spanish territory for a period exceeding three months if they fall into one of the following categories:

  • They are employed or self-employed workers in Spain.
  • They have, for themselves and their family members, sufficient resources to not become a burden for social assistance in Spain during their period of residence, as well as public or private health insurance that covers all risks in Spain. The assessment of the sufficiency of economic means will be made individually and, in any case, taking into account the personal and family situation of the applicant.
  • They are students and are enrolled in a public or private center, recognized or financed by the competent educational administration, with a formative purpose; and have a public or private health insurance that provides full coverage in Spain and guarantee that they have sufficient resources for themselves and their family members to not become a burden for the social assistance of the Spanish State during their period of residence.
  • They are family members accompanying or going to meet with a citizen of a Member State of the European Union or of another State party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area or of Switzerland that meets the conditions contemplated in any of the above assumptions. The family member can be:
  • In the case of a student’s family member, his or her spouse or registered domestic partner or the student’s children and their spouse or dependent partner.
  • In the other cases, the registered spouse or domestic partner, their direct descendants and those of their spouse or partner under 21 years of age or incapable or older of that age who are dependent on them, and their direct ascendants or those of their spouse or of the registered couple living in their charge.
  • This right of residence is also applicable to members of the family, whatever their nationality, if they accompany or are going to meet with a citizen of a Member State of the European Union or of another State party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area. or from Switzerland that meets the conditions set out in one of the first three paragraphs above.
